SLIMMING PROTEIN POWDER FOR SYDNROME X

                                                Pages 216 - 217

Protein powders can provide a source of complete protein in a convenient and easily digested form. They are great for a quick energy burst, and to sustain you during hunger pangs in between meals. If you are busy, or just feeling lazy, you can make a complete meal out of a protein powder, and some fruit or vegetables.

I have found that whey protein concentrate is the most effective protein supplement for those with a weight problem or Syndrome X. Soy protein is not such a high quality protein as whey protein concentrate is. Those allergic to whole dairy products will not usually have a problem with whey protein, as it is very easy to digest.

I prefer protein powders that are unsweetened, or sweetened with the natural herb Stevia, rather than artificially sweetened powders.

You should look for a protein powder that contains the following ingredients -

Whey protein concentrate as its main ingredient.
Extra amounts of the amino acid Taurine, which is essential for healthy liver        function and fat metabolism.
Extra amounts of the amino acid Glutamine, which can act as a fuel for the brain,        and reduces cravings for sweets and alcohol. It is also useful for digestive        disorders. Laboratory studies in mice have shown that supplemental glutamine         is of benefit in glucose control and in reducing elevated insulin levels. Glutamine        reduces the levels of blood fats and reduces insulin resistance. Glutamine is also        able to increase lean muscle mass and decrease the body fat percentage,         probably by its beneficial effect upon blood glucose control.
Added chromium picolinate, which helps to reduce insulin resistance and          stabilise blood sugar levels.

Avoid protein powders containing added sugar or sugar substitutes such as maltodextrin as these can have a high GI.

This protein powder can be used in the following ways -

To make a pleasant drink by itself in between meals, or as an accompaniment         to fresh fruit pieces or muesli for breakfast.
To make a "smoothie" with added fruit (such as banana, strawberries or         blackberries etc.) and ground flaxseed in a blender. You can add a raw egg if you         want even more protein and are using the "smoothie" to replace a meal.
To make a tropical "smoothie" on a hot summer day - try adding some coconut         milk or coconut cream, small amounts of fresh fruits (such as kiwi fruit, mango,         papaya or banana), a few drops of vanilla essence - blend all together in blender         and serve on the rocks - delicious!
To sprinkle over cereals or desserts to increase their protein content.
